The years after Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule in 1945 were a time of extreme crisis that opened a space for fascist ideologies and discourses to gain ascendancy. Book Talk: Company Towns- Time: 3:30 pm
- Location: 820 Matrix, Social Science Building
In Company Towns, Elizabeth Mitchell Elder examines the long-lasting political legacies of mining-company dominance in the Midwest and Appalachia. While the economic consequences of deindustrialization are well-known, Elder shifts the focus to a more insidious problem: the political dysfunction that took root long before the mines shut down. She argues the coal industry cultivated corrupt and low-capacity local governments. These patterns have had enduring consequences for public life. Elder shows how these historical experiences have fueled a broader cynicism toward government, in which citizens expect little from public institutions and doubt the usefulness of elections. Company Towns underscores the consequences of corporate dominance for state capacity, public opinion, and democratic accountability today.

A Poet in Search of Time: O Changhwan in Moscow- Time: 5:00 pm
- Location: Institute of East Asian Studies, Conference Room, 2111 Bancroft Way, 5th Floor, Berkeley, CA 94720
My talk begins and ends with O's poetic travelogue of his 1949 journey to Moscow for medical treatment, but I understand that journey to have begun with his earlier decision to cross the 38th parallel and move to the northern zone of the Korean Peninsula in 1947. In reading O's poems, translations and essays from the interregnum, I hope to write a more provisional history of an early Cold War modernism, one shaped by decolonization and the refusal of anticommunism, and one that sought a home, however transiently, in the nascent revolutionary-socialist state of North Korea.
