Born in Ithaca, New York, Dean Liu joined UC Berkeley as a faculty member in the EECS Department in 1996 and, in 2018, became the first woman in the history of UC Berkeley to serve as Dean of the College of Engineering (CoE). Being a Chinese-American and leading one of the foremost technology institutions in the world, Dean Liu is in a unique position to witness as well as influence America’s fast-changing relationship with China in the technology arena.

After telling the approximately 100 attendees her personal story, Dean Liu answered questions from the audience ranging from new buildings added to the CoE, to joint programs with the Haas School of Business, to the Tsinghua Berkeley Shenzhen Institute, to the effect of visa limitations on graduate students from China, to what’s being done to encourage more women to study engineering, to asking companies that want to recruit Berkeley grads whether they measure and track the promotion of women and minority engineers.

A multi-course Chinese banquet was served before we closed the evening with a screening of four short documentaries recently created by students from the UC Berkeley Department of Asian American and Asian Diaspora Chinese-American History class.  These documentaries were completed with financial support from the CAA Chinese Chapter.
