The Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship & The Jack Van Zander Scholarship 2024

In 2014, the Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County established the Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. In 2016, Jack Van Zander's name was added to the Fund, making it the Larry Horan – Jim Langley – Jack Van Zander Scholarship Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. The Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship and the Jack Van Zander Scholarship are intended to honor outstanding Cal alumni Larry Horan, Jim Langley, and Jack Van Zander who have made significant contributions to the community, and to monetarily assist worthy students who will be attending Cal.

Design

Basic Information about the Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship and the Jack Van
Zander Scholarship

The Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County, through the Community Foundation of
Monterey County, will award the Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship and the
Jack Van Zander Scholarship to local high school students who are graduating from
public or private high schools and who will be attending UC Berkeley during the 2024-
2025 school year.

Students applying for the Larry Horan-Jim Langley Scholarship must reside in
Monterey County.

Students applying for the Jack Van Zander Scholarship must reside on the Monterey
Peninsula. The “Monterey Peninsula” is defined as the geographical area served by the
Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, the Pacific Grove Unified School District,
and the Carmel Unified School District.

Size of award: Up to $2,500

Selection criteria for the Horan-Langley Scholarship and the Van Zander Scholarship:
The student applicant must have demonstrated excellence in some or all of the categories
of leadership, scholarship, athletics and other extra-curricular activities, and community
service. The student applicant’s financial need will also be a consideration.
The student applicant must submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to UC
Berkeley by the cutoff date and must enroll for the fall 2024-spring 2025 semesters at UC
Berkeley.

The student applicant must submit a written Scholarship Application Packet to the Cal
Alumni Club of Monterey County no later than Friday, June 14th, 2024. Preferred
submission of completed application packets is by an attachment to an e-mail to John

If selected for an interview, student applicants must interview with the Cal Alumni Club
of Monterey County Scholarship Interview Committee.

Student deadline to submit SIR to Cal:
May 15th, 2024 (Freshman entry) or June 1st (Transfer students)
Deadline to submit Scholarship Application:
No later than Friday, June 14, 2024, 5 p.m. PDT
Finalist Interviews:
June 17 - June 25, 2024
Scholarship Awardee Notifications:
On or before July 28, 2024

PART II — PERSONAL ESSAY
The Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship and the Jack Van Zander Scholarship are to be
awarded to entering Cal students who have demonstrated excellence in some or all of the
categories of leadership, scholarship, athletics and other extra-curricular activities, and
community service. An applicant’s financial need will also be taken into consideration.
In an essay of up to 1500 words, please respond to the following two prompts.
1. Describe your major accomplishments to date, both in school and out of school, as well as
examples of any or all of your personal qualities, strengths, talents, awards, and life experiences
that you think qualify you for this scholarship.
2. Which of your current activities, if any, do you plan to continue to engage in at Cal? Are there
any new activities that you are looking forward to pursuing at Cal? Which of your skills, talents,
and strengths will you bring to those activities at Cal?
