The Jack Van Zander Scholarship

Introduction and Purpose
In 2014, the Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County established the Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. In 2016, Jack Van Zander’s name was added to the Fund, making it the Larry Horan – Jim Langley – Jack Van Zander Scholarship Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. The Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship and the Jack van Zander Scholarship are intended to honor outstanding Cal alumni Larry Horan, Jim Langley, and Jack Van Zander who have made significant contributions to the community, and to monetarily assist worthy students who will be attending Cal.
Basic Information about the Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship and the Jack Van Zander Scholarship
The Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County, through the Community Foundation of Monterey County, will award the Larry Horan – Jim Langley Scholarship and the Jack Van Zander Scholarship to local high school students who are graduating from public or private high schools who will be attending UC Berkeley during the 2022-2023 school year. Students applying for the Larry Horan-Jim Langley Scholarship must reside in Monterey County. Students applying for the Jack Van Zander Scholarship must reside on the Monterey Peninsula. The “Monterey Peninsula” is defined as the geographical area served by the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, the Pacific Grove Unified School District, and the Carmel Unified School District.
Size of awards: Up to $2,500
Selection criteria for the Horan-Langley Scholarship and the Van Zander Scholarship:
The student applicant must have demonstrated excellence in some or all of the categories of leadership, scholarship, athletics and other extra-curricular activities, and community service. The student applicant’s financial need will also be a consideration.
The student applicant must submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to UC Berkeley by May 1, 2022, and must enroll for the fall 2022/spring 2023 semesters at UC Berkeley.
The student applicant must submit a written Scholarship Application Packet to the Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County no later than Friday, May 13th, 2022. If selected for an interview, student applicants must interview with the Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County Scholarship Interview Committee.
Selections Process
The Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County will work with UC Berkeley and the Community Foundation of Monterey County to invite applications for the Horan-Langley Scholarship and Van Zander Scholarship from all Monterey County and Monterey Peninsula graduating high school students who have been accepted to, and will be attending, UC Berkeley. Applications will be made available online at the Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County’s website: https://alumnichapters.berkeley.edu/monterey
Prior to the application deadline, interested students will submit a written application to the Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County. This application can be as an attachment to an email (preferable) to: jdurein@calalum.org or may also be sent in print form via the U.S. Postal Service to: John Durein, Scholarship Chair, Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County, 2020 Via Taormina, Monterey, CA 93940
The applications will be read by the Cal Alumni Club of Monterey County Scholarship Committee to determine adherence to the selection criteria for the scholarship. The applicants who best meet the selection criteria will be asked to interview individually with the Committee.
The Committee will select Awardees. It will then send a Winner Identification Form to the Community Foundation, and will provide the winner with an Award Letter and a Claim Form. The Foundation will issue the checks directly to UC Berkeley upon receipt of the Claim Form and proof of registration from the student.
