We have various events including a monthly mixer, luncheon and dinner meetings which feature speakers on important local issues such as water, and broader issues such as conflict in the Middle East, programs for youth at risk in Monterey County, and travel programs under the CAA umbrella.

Event: A Cal Odyssey - Scott Fujita’s Journey from Cal to the NFL to Head of All Saints School
Date and Time: October 16, 2019, 5:30pm-7:30pm​
Location: Rancho Canada (now Palo Corona Regional Park), 4860 Carmel Valley Road
Description: After growing up in Southern California, Scott Fujita enrolled at Cal, earning a BA in political science and an MA in education. He played a key role on the Bear’s defensive team. He was an honorable mention All-Pac 10 and Academic All-Pac 10. After graduating in 2002, he was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. He later played for Dallas, New Orleans and Cleveland. Scott was a member of the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Saints. In 2012 he began a relationship with All Saints Day School, first as a parent, then joining the Board, serving as Athletic Director, and as of July 1, becoming Headmaster. Scott has been active in a wide range of community activities, promoting adoption, breast cancer awareness, environmental protection, and LGBT rights. Scott is the quintessential Cal student-athlete, using his education to serve the community.

Description: Mary Alice Cerrito Fettis, a Santa Catalina School graduate, was born and raised in Monterey in a prominent local Italian family that pioneered in the restaurant industry. Mary Alice has been deeply engaged in community work, and served as President of the Monterey Hotel & Restaurant Association. For several years, she served as the President of Monterey’s Old Fisherman’s Wharf Association and currently serves on its board. She is steeped in local history and actively supports education about Monterey’s history, serving on the Board of Directors of the Monterey History & Art Association and has chaired the La Merienda Committee. Her family roots, experience in running a restaurant on Fisherman’s Wharf and continued engagement in the community allow her to provide us with a unique insight into the history of the Wharf. A walking tour of the Wharf will be available if a sufficient number of attendees is interested.

Description: For more than two decades the Cal Alumni Club has hosted a luncheon reception for Monterey County high school students who have been admitted to Cal. This is our opportunity to explain why they should choose Cal from among the elite list of colleges that have recruited them, and what to expect when they enroll. Students and their parents will hear from the Office of Admissions, and from current Cal students and alumni how the Cal experience transforms lives and prepares them for a successful career and community engagement. Join us to meet these impressive young people and share your experiences with them as they set out on the next stage of their lives.

Event: Celebrating the Cal 1958 Pacific Coast Conference Champions and Honoring Joe Kapp
Description: This year marks the 60th anniversary of Cal’s Pacific Coast Conference championship football team that won them the invitation to represent the PCC in the 1959 Rose Bowl. There will be celebration of this great team at the Big Game on November 17. Members who wish to car pool to the game should contact Doug Smith at or Mike Ipson at no later than November 10. Joe Kapp, who along with Jack Hart was captain of the team, will be honored with a plaque at Goldman Plaza at the north end of Memorial Stadium. Joe’s football and basketball teammates are establishing a fund in Joe’s name to provide student-athletes support in academic development and leadership skills on and off the field. The team has set an initial goal of raising $25,000. If you wish to contribute you can make out a check payable to UC Regents, entering Joe Kapp Fund on the memo line, and mailing it to Mike Ipson at 1055 Laurel Lane, Pebble Beach, CA 93953. Your contribution will be tax-deductible.

Description: Mary Adams was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2016. Prior to her election, for 14 year she was CEO of United Way Monterey County. During this time, she helped raise $50 million to provide crucial services for thousands of local people. She worked with the County on many issues, helping homeless children, providing meals for seniors, preventing gang violence, and increasing economic opportunity for working families. Under her leadership, United Way launched the 2-1-1 hotline, providing free information on local health and human services for working families in 174 different languages. Supervisor Adams is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Monterey County Water Management District and the Fort Ord Reuse Authority.

Speaker: Ambassador David Lyon

Description: China has asserted claims in the South China Sea, richly endowed with oil and other resources, literally creating islands from coral reefs and building military bases to control maritime traffic. These moves conflict with claims from Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. They also threaten a major trade route between South Asia and the Middle East with North Asia and North America. The U.S. Navy has conducted freedom of navigation voyages to emphasize all nation’s rights to safe passage. 

Retired Ambassador David Laurence Lyon will provide unique analysis of the challenges that the U.S. faces in responding to Chinese assertiveness. Ambassador Lyon resigned from the U.S. Foreign Service in 2005 following a 33 year career with the Department of State, including postings to Beijing.
